Community Level 1 – Acquainted

Materials: Premade Index cards

How To Play: This activity can be played to review math facts,
vocabulary, or other content with students. In this activity, students
will be using synonyms. Each student is given an index card with a word
on it and a question to ask. The activity might begin like this:

Student 1: Who has beautiful?
Student 2: I do. Beautiful is a synonym for gorgeous. Who has sleep?
Student 3: I do. Sleep is a synonym for slumber. Who has afraid?

The game continues until all students have read their card. This is a
fun way to review information while including everyone in the class.
Students not only have to be attentive during the activity, but they
also benefit from hearing many synonyms for commonly overused words.

Here is a list of possible synonyms:

Plan for Success:
The first time the activity is played, the teacher can use preprinted
cards with synonyms on them. The next time the activity is played,
students can include their own synonyms created from a lesson in class
or from their own research.

Variations: After playing the activity with students,
you can ask them to brainstorm a list of synonyms for another round of
the game. As a homework assignment, ask students to write down their
word from the index card on a piece of paper. Have them ask four people
to come up with a synonym for the word. These can be shared in future
games.

Players speak to each other in this fashion:
