Description

Developmental Designs approach intentionally integrates the social, emotional and academic needs (S.E.A.L) of our students. It provides structures for teaching the whole child, so that academic growth is enhanced, not limited, by the social and emotional realities of our Pk-12 students. Our academic day will include active, social learning experiences relevant to school age children’s developmental needs. Our approach to behavior management is based on our belief that all students can grow and succeed; we help children build self-control.

Based on the science of child development, Developmental Designs addresses five essential needs: (SCARF) SAFETY: I want to feel safe. COMPETENCE: I want success in what I do, and to feel like a worthwhile, significant person. AUTONOMY: I want to be independent. RELATIONSHIP: I want to connect with others. FUN: I want to have a good time in healthy and safe ways.

The impact of your donation:
  •      9% decrease in conduct problems/aggression – students learn skill of being assertive
  •      10% decrease in emotional distress i.e., anxiety and depression
  •      9% improvement in attitudes about self, others, and school
  •      23% improvement in social and emotional skills
  •      9% improvement in academic behavior
  •      11% improvement in achievement test scores

Students will develop core success skills; anger management, metacognition, and refusal skills, which are relevant to preventing a wide range of high-risk behaviors.  The integrated SEL approach also promotes other protective factors, such as increased student connectedness, academic achievement, and perceived levels of social support, which lessens trauma and pain in our students.

Long term/collateral benefits of our approach – Developmental Designs: Research demonstrates the significant role of SEL in promoting the healthy development and academic achievement of all students. It also shows that SEL programming significantly raises test scores while it lowers levels of emotional distress; disruptive behavior; and alcohol, tobacco, or other drug use.

Over the last 21 years, I have seen programs and approaches that simply do not align with what we know about children, relationships, learning, and community. I value Developmental Designs so much because it is grounded in current research–and, really, what the best educators have always known to be true.  The most powerful, relevant, and engaging learning experiences in all my years of professional development.
