Materials: Premade Index cards

How To Play: This activity can be played to review math facts,
vocabulary, or other content with students. In this activity, students
will be using synonyms. Each student is given an index card with a word
on it and a question to ask. The activity might begin like this:

Student 1: Who has beautiful?
Student 2: I do. Beautiful is a synonym for gorgeous. Who has sleep?

Materials: An object to hide

How To Play: Players sit in a circle. While everyone else’s
eyes are closed, the leader hides an object. When the signal is given,
players begin looking for the object. Whenever a player finds the
object, he returns to the circle, says, “Huckle buckle beanstalk,” and
sits down. The game is over when all players have found the object and
have returned to the circle.

Materials: Paper, pencils, dice

How To Play: You will need a piece of paper for each player and
one pencil and one die per group. Divide the students up into groups of
four to six players. Groups sit in separate, mini circles. Each group
puts the pencil and the die in the center of the circle. Each player
places a piece of paper in front of him or her. The object is to be the
first player to write up to 100 by ones. Here is the catch. Players
can write only if they roll a six.

Materials: Large, open space

How To Play: Two or three players are It, and one player acts as
the doctor. Players move within boundaries and avoid being tagged by
the Its.

When tagged the first time, a player places a hand where she was tagged
(as if covering the wound) and keeps moving to avoid being tagged again.

When tagged the second time, a player places his other hand over the new wound and keeps moving.

How To Play: This is a singing activity. Have students practice
to pretend to chew gum by making loud smacking sounds with their mouth
and mime playing with a yo-yo while saying, “Wooo wooo.”

Herman the Worm song:
“Sittin’ on a fence post chewin’ my bubble gum (smack, smack, smack,
smack) playin’ with my yo-yo (wooo, wooo) when along came Herman the
Worm and he was this big (show about an inch space between fingers).”

Here’s My Rhythm

Materials: None

How to Play: Players are seated in a circle. The first player
starts the chant, “Here’s my rhythm so check my beat.” He then makes a
four-beat pattern. The class repeats the pattern. The adjacent player
says the chant, invents a rhythm, and the class repeats it. Players
continue around the circle, alternating between chant, rhythm, repeat,
until all players have had a turn to initiate the chant and rhythm.

Helium Hoop

Materials: 1 hula hoop for each group of 4 to 6 players

How To Play: Four to six players gather around a hula hoop (a
lightweight stick can also be used) and put their index fingers under
the hoop’s edge, starting with the hoop at roughly waist level. As a
group, they try to lower the hoop to the floor while keeping everybody’s two fingers touching the underside of the hoop at all times.

Head and Shoulders, Baby: A “play party” circle game

How to Play: Make an inner and an outer circle with partners
facing each other. Say each verse of the following chant, making the
movements indicated:

“Head and shoulders, baby, 1, 2, 3!”
Touch your own head and shoulders with your hands, clap your hands on “baby”, and clap both of your partners hands on “1,2, 3.”

“Head and shoulders, baby, 1, 2, 3!”

Have You Ever . . .

Materials: None

How To Play: One player stands in the middle and her chair is
removed. She then says: “Have you ever…” then says something about what
she has done (e.g. Have you ever been to Mexico?” Everybody who has
done that gets up and finds a new seat. While that is happening, the
player in the middle is also looking for a seat. Someone will be left
without a seat, and the next round begins.
